To the Nursing Student Who Feels Like Quitting

Alexis Echevarria

If you’re reading this right now and thinking about quitting nursing school…

I want you to pause for a second.

Take a breath.

Because I’ve been where you are.

I know what it feels like to sit in your car after an exam and cry.

To feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and completely drained.

To question yourself and wonder, “Am I really cut out for this?”

Nursing school is not easy.

It will push you mentally, emotionally, and physically in ways you never expected.

There will be moments when you feel like you’re not smart enough.

Moments when you compare yourself to others.

Moments when you feel like everyone else understands except you.

And in those moments… quitting can feel like the easiest option.

But I need you to hear this:

You didn’t come this far just to give up now.

There was a reason you chose this path.

A reason you decided to become a nurse.

A reason you pushed through the application process, the prerequisites, the long nights of studying.

That reason still exists—even if it feels buried under stress right now.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you that nursing school magically gets easy.

It doesn’t.

But you get stronger.

You learn how to manage your time.

You learn how to study smarter.

You learn how to keep going even on the days you feel like you have nothing left.

And one day, you’ll look back and realize…

You made it through something that once felt impossible.

If you’ve failed an exam—keep going.

If you feel behind—keep going.

If you’re doubting yourself—keep going.

Because failure, stress, and self-doubt are not signs that you should quit.

They are signs that you are growing.

And growth is uncomfortable.

To the nursing student who feels like quitting:

You are not alone.

You are not incapable.

And you are definitely not done.

Your future patients need you.

Your story matters.

And the nurse you’re becoming is worth fighting for.

So don’t quit.

Take a break if you need to.

Cry if you need to.

Rest if you need to.

But don’t give up.

Because one day, you’ll be the nurse you once dreamed of becoming.

And you’ll be so proud that you didn’t quit.
